Taylor Mill Tank

The Northern Kentucky Water District (NKWD) broke ground in October on a new water tank for the Taylor Mill pressure zone. With a capacity of 500,000 gallons, the new tank will be able to adequately serve the 2,633 active services in this tank’s pressure zone and provide sufficient storage in the case of an emergency.

The new tank will provide:

  • better water pressure
  • enhanced water quality
  • adequate water storage
  • room for pressure zone growth
  • increased water flow

The project is estimated to be complete in Fall 2025 (subject to change).

Project History - Taylor Mill Standpipe

  • The Taylor Mill pressure zone was previously served by a standpipe located next to Taylor Mill Elementary School.
    • 330,000 gallon capacity
    • Overflow elevation of 1010
  • Only top quarter of water in standpipe was a usable amount (due to water pressure)
    • Usable storage was closer to 90,000 (out of the 330,000 capacity)
  • Standpipe wasn’t tall enough and didn’t create enough pressure
    • Required to have at least 30 pounds of pressure
    • Portions of this system were reading close to this threshold
  • Standpipe was removed in 2019 and the pressure zone began borrowing storage from two tanks outside of Taylor Mill.

Why couldn’t NKWD leave the standpipe in place until the new tank was built?

  • NKWD needed to begin preparing the Taylor Mill pressure zone for a new tank.
    • Slowly started to increase pressure to match future tanks pressure.
    • Increasing pressure all at once would result in significant water main breaks (and water loss).
    • The standpipe wouldn’t have been able to handle the increase in pressure which would have resulted in tank overflow (rendering it no longer functional).
    • Started to replace old water main that wouldn’t be able to handle higher pressure.

Picking a New Site Location

The standpipe location was not large enough for the new tank and was landlocked. NKWD began searching to identify a new location and was able to obtain a new site located half a mile south from Scott High School on Pride Parkway.

The new site is:

  • More centralized to system which enhances water quality.
  • High enough elevation to meet pressure and storage needs.
    • This will provide a buffer against pressure variations due to rapid increases or decreases in water demand in the area.
  • Positioned along NKWD’s 16” transmission main on Pride Parkway.
    • This will help fill and empty the tank as water is distributed throughout the 45 miles of water main in the zone.
